Problem:
Suppose that (unβ) is a sequence of real numbers satisfying un+2β=2un+1β+unβ, and that u3β=9 and u6β=128. What is u5β?
Answer Choices:
A. 40
B. 53
C. 68
D. 88
E. 104
Solution:
Note that u5β=2u4β+9 and 128=u6β=2u5β+u4β=5u4β+18. Thus u4β=22, and it follows that u5β=2β
22+9=(B)53β.
