Problem:
For a real number x, define β‘(x) to be the average of x and x2. What is β‘(1)+β‘(2)+β‘(3)?
Answer Choices:
A. 3
B. 6
C. 10
D. 12
E. 20
Solution:
Note that β‘(1)=21+12β=1,β‘(2)=22+22β=3, and β‘(3)= 23+32β=6. Thus β‘(1)+β‘(2)+β‘(3)=1+3+6=(C)10β.
